MPT – Magnetic Particle Testing

MPT

About MPT

Magnetic Particle Testing (MPT) is a widely used inspection method for identifying surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials.

During the testing process, a magnetic field is applied to the component. When a defect interrupts the magnetic field, it creates a local flux leakage. Magnetic particles are then applied to the inspection area, where they gather around the leakage points and form visible indications of the defect.

This makes MPT particularly useful for locating fine cracks and other discontinuities that may not be easily visible during a normal visual inspection.

How MPT Works

01 — Magnetize
A magnetic field is applied to the component being inspected.
02 — Create Flux Leakage
A surface or near-surface defect interrupts the magnetic field and creates flux leakage.
03 — Apply Magnetic Particles
Magnetic particles are applied to the inspection surface.
04 — Identify the Indication
The particles accumulate around the flux leakage area, making the defect visible for evaluation.

Applications

Key Advantages

Why Magnetic Particle Testing?

Quick & Simple
MPT is a relatively quick and straightforward inspection method.

Fine Crack Detection
It can detect very fine surface and near-surface cracks.

Visible Indications
Magnetic particles gather at defect locations, making indications easier to identify.

Limitations

Important Inspection Requirements

Ferromagnetic Materials Only
MPT is suitable only for ferromagnetic materials.

Surface Preparation
The inspection surface needs to be clean for effective testing.
