UT – Ultrasonic Testing

UT

About UT

Ultrasonic Testing (UT) is a Non-Destructive Testing method used to detect internal flaws in materials using high-frequency sound waves.

During inspection, a probe sends ultrasonic waves into the material. When these waves encounter a defect or reach the back wall of the material, they are reflected back to the probe. The reflected signals are then analyzed based on their time and amplitude to identify and evaluate indications.

UT can also be used for thickness measurement, making it useful for assessing material thickness along with weld and component inspection.

How UT Works

01 — Send
A probe sends high-frequency ultrasonic waves into the material.
02 — Reflect
The waves travel through the material and reflect back from defects or the back wall.
03 — Analyze
The returned signals are analyzed based on their time and amplitude.
04 — Evaluate
The signal information is used to identify relevant internal indications.

UT Applications

Key Advantages

Why Choose Ultrasonic Testing?

Deep Penetration
Ultrasonic waves can provide inspection through the material for internal flaw detection.

Immediate Results
Inspection results can be obtained immediately during testing.

No Radiation Hazard
Unlike radiographic testing, UT does not involve radiation during the inspection process.

Limitations

Surface Preparation
The inspection requires suitable surface preparation.

Skilled Interpretation
Proper evaluation of UT results requires skilled interpretation.
